Habrana belongs to a world of enchantment. Just in the
border of the dry zone, Habarana is a flat land interspersed
with lotus-filled ponds and lush paddy fields. The straight
road is lined with wild flora and is popular for spotting
wild elephants.
Another uniqueness of the landscape is its sudden
protrusions of hard granite rocks. Such a rock, Sigiriya,
was carved into a castle around 477AD and is today
considered the 8th World Wonder. Sigiriya,
with its carved lion paws, moat, water gardens, mirror
walls and beautiful frescos is a magnificent focus
in Dambulla
– almost couple of bends before Habarana.
Another fantastic rock formation in the area is the
largest amethyst rock – it is a huge pinkish
purple mountain, just waiting to be climbed. At its
base is the famous Na forest (Na is a woody tree).
