At any time of the year Kandy is a lovely place to visit, but it is during the months of July – August that Kandy comes alive with festivities. Esela Perahara, one of the greatest pageants in the world vibrates the Kandy streets at night. Traditional dancers, drummers, flag bearers, custodians of temples in their magnificent royal attire, coal-torch bearers and grandly dressed elephants in flowing robes escort the tusker carrying the casket with the sacred Tooth of Lord Buddha. This attracts one of the largest crowds and seats are often booked almost a year ahead.
