The
Seafood Cove, Mount Lavinia Hotel |
|
 |
| |
The Seafood Cove is a most unique restaurant.
First of all, you need not sit at the restaurant. You
may select your own spot in the long stretch of very safe
and clean beach, used almost exclusively by the hotel
guests to enjoy the meal that was prepared exactly to
your preference.
This very rustic seafood shack is maintained under the
strictest hygienic quality controls. Indeed, all nine
control check points specified by HACCP
are ensured here. Then the seafood served is the freshest.
Only the ‘first days’ catch is procured directly
from the fishermen from the neighboring fishing villages. |
| |
The
‘first days’ catch is the term used for fish
caught less than 24 hours. In most restaurants, the seafood
has been in trawlers for 10 – 15 days and then in
the establishment’s freezer for some more days.
To obtain the ‘first days’ catch, the fishing
boats venture no more than a kilometer or so into the
sea and returns to land the same day.
The Seafood Cove ensures that the fish is maintained at
a temperature of 4°C, from the time it is captured
to the time it is served. This temperature ensures that
the fish is not frozen, nor spoiled by bacteria. The seafood
you enjoy here has the freshness of fish just caught from
the sea. The fish that is not served that night is disposed.
Then, there is no menu at this restaurant – only
a list of suggestions. As Seafood Cove procures from few
selected fishermen their day’s catch, it is not
possible to guarantee a particular fish or dish. However,
a typical selection includes shellfish ranging from lagoon
crab to sea crab, shrimp to king prawns and varieties
of fish such as seer, garupa, paraw, tuna, sole, modha
and red mullet. You pick from this selection and the chef
prepares it exactly to your personal preference. |

|
|
The popular choices are baked crabs, cuttlefish
in black bean sauce, garlic prawns and deviled fish. However,
the tuna is so fresh and succulent that you may prefer a sashimi.
Or, as the texture and flavor is unaltered by maintaining optimum
conditions, you may prefer the fish simply marinated in salt
and pepper, grilled and drizzled with lime, which according
to the sous chef, the only way to enjoy seafood. Or, you may
want to call ahead and order the signature dish – the
raging rock lobster and braised saffron rice.
Try out this fine
dinning recipe of this ravishing shellfish. |
